Charlotte Purdue continues to be pounding a laboratory treadmill in 36C heating for the past month.
The 28-year-old told BBC Sport she had completed 10 sessions of around 90 minutes each together with two remaining, in the physiology section of the University of St Mary. The strategy in this madness is to prevent wilting in Friday’s women’s marathon at the World Championships in Doha, which will be scheduled to begin a moment before midnight.
Doha’s furnace-like daytime conditions – that regularly top 40C – meant organisers had little choice but to start the women’s and men’s races as possible. On the other hand, humidity is nevertheless expected by the Hampshire athlete also for temperatures to range.
“The laboratory tracked my heart-ratebody thickness and sweat-rate, also according to these values we exercised if I was adapting to the warmth – it’s so far, so good,” Purdue said before heading into Great Britain’s training camp in Dubai.
“After the very first session I thought I would never be in a position to do this, but I quite enjoy it now.”
Coached by Australian Nic Bideau, the European champion is presently in rude health after a torrid 2018. Injury forced her to withdraw from the London Marathon, subsequently she endured cramp in a race in the European Championships and that was topped off.
By comparison, 2019 saw her turn into the third richest British female marathon runner, triumph at the London half marathon and also follow that up with a place in the Great North Run, where she knocked a moment off her own personal best.
Unsurprisingly, Purdue seemed ebullient.

“I came back off two large build-ups, but did not run the marathons, so it’s not such a jolt that I got into great shape again,” she added.
“I am glad it has gone easier for me this season – looking back on what happened it has worked out fairly nicely.”
The Briton is of completing greater than the 13th she managed two years ago from London, hopeful, along with she might be aided by Doha’s marathon class .
“It is six 7km loops of the Doha Corniche,” she explained. “It is flat so it might be quite a speedy course, although if it wasn’t so hot then it would be a rapid course.
“The good thing is that I love doing loads of loops. Anyone who understand me from training camps knows I enjoy loops.”
The events inside the refurbished Khalifa Stadium also have been scheduled to variable in the weather. Unlike previous World Championships, there aren’t any morning sessions, with the competition starting in the very earliest local time, even after 16:00.
Purdue Eilish McColgan, who will be competing in 10,000 m and the 5,000 m, is not worried about the heat influencing. This was implemented in the Doha Diamond League event in May.
The Scot, whose mom Liz – the 1991 10,000m world champion – coaches children in Doha, told BBC Sport:”People should not freak about it too much. The temperature will be controlled from the low to 20Cs. We ran in 30C through the British ministry in Birmingham.
“That is the reason why a lot of the athletes have been imagining in high altitude in Switzerland or France because they realise that the scene is going to be air conditioned.
“I was speaking to Qatari high jumper Mutaz Barshim who said he found it very cold because there were continuous jets of air. Obviously, for us we won’t believe that.”
McColgan, 28, also passed advice to those intending to train outside the arena:”I have been operating in public parks since the streets are chaos.
“You also must be sure you’re covered appropriately to be able to respect the culture and faith. I make sure I wear more shorts or three-quarter length leggings, and I will always utilize a T-shirt.”
Purdue will line-up in 21:59 BST on Friday and McColgan to the women’s marathon begins her effort final on Saturday in 19:10 BST.
