Jean Campbell, MS, is a breast cancer survivor and advocate, and the founding director of the American Cancer Society Patient Navigator Program. In order to ensure that the information resonated with all generations, the team chose to feature a multi-generational family, with a grandmother, mother and several children.

We trained 4 Latina health educators from the Miami–Dade County Health Department to deliver AMIGAS. The 3-day training provided a framework for delivering AMIGAS to Latina women at risk for HIV and aimed to enhance the health educators’ HIV-related knowledge and skills for delivery of AMIGAS with fidelity to the intervention curriculum. Trainees observed demonstrations of each AMIGAS activity, participated in group discussions and role-playing activities, and practiced teaching activities to demonstrate their knowledge of the curriculum and to experience delivering the intervention in a group setting. We assigned participants to the study conditions after the baseline assessment with concealment-of-allocation procedures, defined by protocol and compliant with published recommendations.19 Before enrollment, an investigator used a random-numbers table to generate the allocation sequence.

Providers may also deliver interventions that they have developed on their own or with research partners.37 Ours was the first successful efficacy trial of a systematic linguistic and cultural adaptation of an evidence-based intervention for use with a diverse Latina population. The Latina health educators implemented the AMIGAS curriculum with remarkable fidelity. Of all the activities outlined in the curriculum, 98% were independently rated as having been correctly implemented. The participants also gave health educators superior ratings for the manner in which they delivered the curriculum. To assess the efficacy of AMIGAS, we surveyed participants at baseline and at 3- and 6-month postintervention follow-ups.

During this time, more single women and more families began to migrate along with the working males who had already been migrating for several decades. This difference in gender migration is largely attributed to the difference in Latino and Latina work opportunities in the United States. Prior to the 1970s, the majority of the Latino migratory work was agriculturally based. However, with the end of the Bracero program, the United States policy on migration within the hemisphere shifted from encouraging primarily working males to migrate.

Patterns of female family structure are found to be similar in Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic, and tend to be more matrifocal.

Only 3 percent of Latina women are represented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, or STEM, fields, while women in total make up 24 percent of the STEM workforce. Latinas are 17 times more likely to die from diabetes than non-Hispanic white women.

As a result, Latino immigrants struggle to gain health care once they enter the United States. Non-citizen Latinos often avoid hospitals and clinics for fear of deportation, leading to an increased risk of preventable diseases such as tuberculosis and Hepatitis in this population. Additionally, Latino health deteriorates as this population assimilates into unhealthy lifestyles associated with lower socioeconomic American populations.

Ensuring this population has access to good jobs and the social safety net is critical to addressing economic inequality. Today is Latina Equal Pay Day, the day in 2018 when Hispanic women in the United States have to work to earn as much as white men in the United States earned in 2017 alone. Doing back-breaking work under the unforgiving sun, sleeping in rough shacks with dozens of men to a room, all for below-poverty-level wages; farm workers in the early Twentieth Century, most of whom were immigrants from Central America, had a hard, painful, unjust life. In 1965, Huerta created the United Farm Workers, an organization that worked tirelessly to improve the working conditions for farm workers. By leading boycotts, picketing, protesting and lobbying, Huerta was instrumental in bringing about legislation that protects some of the most vulnerable people in our society.

Why do Hispanics love to ignore the existence of non-Spanish speaking latinas? The constant erasure of afro-Latinos and those of us who don’t come from Spanish speaking countries in these articles is horrendous.

She was a key leader in labor, civic engagement and civil rights organizing and has led lawsuits, national boycotts and campaigns. As the president of the Dolores Huerta Foundation, she continues to advocate for civil rights.
