Canada’s Golden Boy Loses His Shine
It was Feb. 28, 1984, and Canada’s funding was being pummeled by a blizzard. Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau took a walk from the snow to consider his potential and stepped from his Ottawa house. His administration had survived an independence referendum in Quebec but came out bloodier for it. His poll numbers were abysmal. After 15 years on top, it was time to proceed.
And so he announced he will be retiring from political life.
Decades later, almost to the day, Trudeau’s son faced the tumultuous period of his political career.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has had a comparatively smooth four years. The majority of his scandals and controversies were spun, or forgettable –like when he recovered a helicopter ride in the Aga Khan, the spiritual leader of the world’s Ismaili Muslims, that violated integrity rules that are parliamentary. However, this affair won’t be smoothed over.
