Mabs Cross set to tackle six furlongs at Ascot
Mabs Cross is utilized to handle six furlongs for the first time in well over a couple of years in the Qipco British Champions Sprint.
The mare that was noble created her first two career starts over the longer sprint distance in the spring of 2017, but has been retained to five furlongs.
The five-year-old has won seven of her 19 career starts – a race in which she finished fifth on her latest appearance.
Mabs Cross will lineup for what might be her swansong on British Champions Day, together with trainer Michael Dods admitting the prospect of extremely testing conditions is an issue as she steps up in trip.
“The plan is still to run, so far as I know,” stated the Darlington-based trainer.
“We have always wanted to try her over six furlongs, but this is obviously a stiff six in soft ground. It is not ideal, but it is the same for everyone and they’re doing everything they could to get on the assembly.
“She seems nicely, so I believe we will let her take her chance and see how she gets .”
The heir apparent to Mabs Cross since the trainer star is Dakota Gold, that claimed his fifth victory when landing the Listed Rous Stakes at Ascot last time out.
The son of Equiano is most likely to round off his effort next month’s Wentworth Stakes at Doncaster.
“We have kept him ticking over and the plan is to visit Doncaster for the Proper race,” Dods additional.
“He’s in great form, so hopefully he’ll go there and who would be his final run of this year”
