Mixed team time trial could feature at Paris 2024 Olympics
A group time trial might be part of the Paris 2024 road cycling programme in the event the event proves popular in this year’s world championships.
The case, trialled in the European championships in Alkmaar this year, which makes its world championships debut on Sunday in Yorkshire with national teams comprising three female cyclists and three riders.
It could potentially allow an additional street event in Paris to go next to the street races and time trials that are individual and follows involves women’s road cycling to have a higher profile.
“The UCI will be interested to understand how this arrangement evolves over the upcoming Olympic phase and are open to using the IOC to introduce a new and innovative structure into the present Road Cycling programme at the Olympic Games,” a UCI spokesman said on Wednesday.
“Looking forward, this could match perfectly with our aim of complete gender parity in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with the goal that female and male cyclists will enjoy equivalent number of quotas, chords and events.”
The mixed team time trial will see three men riders handle a panoramic 14km circuit around Harrogate using the women’s trio setting off if the 2nd male rider crosses the line. Times are an aggregate of women’s and the men’s riders.
