Far-right politician Jair Bolsonaro is elected president of Brazil in a sweeping triumph which could transform the face of Latin America’s democracy that is biggest
Until recently, the previous army-captain-turned-congressman had been a fringe right-wing sound in Brazilian politics. On Sunday, Bolsonaro won 55.1 % of this vote in front of their left-wing opponent, Fernando Haddad, and had been announced Brazil’s next president.
Bolsonaro happens to be called “the Trump of this tropics, ” but his fans would rather call him “the Legend. ” He has got already been referred to as the “the many misogynistic, hateful elected official into the democratic world”. Their appeal has exploded as Brazilian voters grew fed up with increasing criminal activity prices, federal federal government corruption scandals, and a recession that is economic no end in sight.
Bolsonaro has freely praised the country’s brutal former army dictatorship and stated so it needs to have killed 30,000 more people—“If several innocent individuals die, that’s alright”—and even devoted their vote to impeach Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff up to an armed forces colonel accused of torturing 500 left-wing dissidents. Their record on LGBTQ liberties, women’s legal rights, and native legal rights shows exactly the same vicious, narrow-minded prejudice.

“The president-elect has campaigned with an agenda that is openly anti-human-rights usually made discriminatory statements about various sets of culture, ” Erika Guevara-Rosas, Americas Director at Amnesty Overseas, stated in a declaration. “their election as Brazil’s president could pose a large risk to native Peoples and quilombolas, conventional rural communities, LGBTI individuals, Black youth, ladies, activists, and civil culture businesses, if their rhetoric is changed in public places policy.
